12 Weeks of Christmas - Week 3 Reveal

This is such a cute ornament. I would like to share my experience with this pattern. First, the designer of this pattern (Frayed Knots) is obviously an accomplished pattern designer. The pattern is easy to read and spaced in a nice manner making it easier to understand. There is an abbreviation list and a materials list for those who need it.

The only thing that I would desire in this pattern is a way to create a holder or hanger for the tree. Some perhaps would use the handle as a hanger, but I do not find that too desirable. If you do, YAY! I do have a way to add a hanger if you would like to continue to read.

I did choose to use a size H hook instead of the recommended G hook simply because it was near me. This gave me a bigger ornament. If you want a smaller ornament, I do suggest using a G hook or even a F hook if you crochet loosely.

I chose to use burgundy as my main color as it is a deeper red simply because the color reminds me of Christmas. The "coffee" or "hot chocolate" color I chose is Cafe Latte by Red Heart. It works with either one as the coffee that I am around (but don't drink) is usually caramel in color. The only changes I did to the pattern for my own desires is adding a hanger and creating just a chain for the handle. It still looks good!

Here's the photos!

Looking down into the cup.

From more of the side.

This years and last year's cups!

Size comparison between a H hook and a G hook.
The smaller one is a G hook.

As you can see on the first two photos, I added a hanger. What I did was attach the red yarn at the final sl st and the beginning of the cup handle. I chained up 16 and reattached it to the same spot. This will give a tipped over look on the tree as if the coffee/hot chocolate is spilling out. As you can see, I did not make the marshmallows as these are "coffee" ornaments. I also chose not to overfill the red one, but you can see the effect of overfilling on the green one.

Would you like to know where these new ornaments are heading too?
Stay tuned for an update post!

12 Weeks of Christmas - Week 3

Week 3
Hot Chocolate/Coffee Ornament

Like the last pattern, I have crocheted this ornament before and absolutely love it. The Hot Cocoa Mug Ornament was created by Frayed Knot and is absolutely adorable! Yes, I used absolutely twice in one sentence. There is no way to not fall in love with this little ornament. Last year, I crocheted it as a gift for my roommate who grew up working in the coffee business in Puerto Rico. What a perfect gift for the coffee lover huh? He adored it!

NOTE: Please do not use the link at the bottom of the Ravelry post. You will get an File Not Found page. You can download it for free from Ravelry at the top of the note section.

Project Type: Scrap buster

Skill level: Easy/Beginners with a little advanced knowledge about sewing

Hook Size: G or H hook (I used H.)

Type of Yarn: Worsted Weight - I used Red Heart in Burgundy and Cafe Latte.

Extra requirements:
Fiberfil
Scissors
Stitch marker (if you need it)

Uses for finished product

  • Without using the fiberfil or the "coffee" part, you could make a set for a children's tea set.
  • An ornament
  • A gift

Because of the type of project, this may take a little more time. I attempted to schedule some of the more time consuming ornaments further away from Christmas. I find that it is easier to take a little extra time in October and the beginning of November than 2 weeks before Christmas. Christmas parties, shopping, and just spending time with loved ones takes priority to making last minute gifts or ornaments....for....yourself. LOL!

What do you do when it gets closer to Christmas?

What am I working on....

We made the decision to try to sell this fall at our local market and start working on building up stock to participate in future craft fairs. So this morning, I went through what I had already made and packaged to make a list of what I need to make. Anyone who has done this knows how daunting it can be - the inventory and the lack of inventory.

Yes, I know it is April. But, I started working on Fall/Christmas stock because some of them are a) easy to make, b) great in between project fillers, and c) a little elaborate. Yesterday, I posted that I was struggling with what to do next, so I started on something I enjoy - ornaments. My goal is a bit on the larger side, but that's okay. Better to shoot for the moon than shoot for just a few feet in the air.

I wanted to start small because it was late in the night. This is what I did last night:

Christmas Stocking Ornament in Dark Orchid

This morning, after inventory I chose to do my own pattern - Medallion Christmas Ornaments. I ended up developing two other sizes, which I might release as a e-book closer to Christmas! Today, I do not plan on actually creating the medallions by sewing them together. I am just making the sides. I've gotten 4 sets of sides done so far - with many interruptions!

Aren't they lovely? The coloring is off, but they are red and green. I plan on making many colors and having some for purchase in my Etsy shop closer to Christmas.

What are you working on today?

Re-Release: Ball Gown for Barbie

Like previously mentioned, the two new patterns came from a decision to re-release and update my patterns. Want to see the pictures of the Ball Gown?

The newest pattern is available at all my stores!

What do you think? Aren't they just cute?!?

INTRODUCING: Barbie Sweater Dress

Today I am introducing one of my Spring Barbie Collection patterns. It will be available to purchase in all shops by the end of the day.

Barbie Sweater Dress

The inspiration of this pattern came from a pair of fingerless mittens I saw with a ribbing. It reminded me of the bottom cuff of a sweater! So, I developed the pattern to fit Barbie.

Want to see the pictures? Of course you do!

Look how cute! This cute dress will be available for purchase in my Etsy store soon. I have one available now; however, I do accept custom orders.

Looking forward to releasing new patterns,
Sarah

Preview of Upcoming Spring Patterns

I have a bit of work to do on formatting the patterns and putting them to PDF; however, I have finally created a good background for my new patterns. Would you like to see a preview?

I thought so!

Please remember to respect my copyright! There will be quite a few sets coming out for my Spring line! Yes, they are all Barbie; however, I will have different patterns in different categories coming up. Stay tuned.

Are you excited for new patterns?

Months of Work

This crochet designer has figured out a better, more efficient, and prettier way to format and write patterns. Currently I have around 30 patterns or so, give or take a few. So, in the idea to create a more uniform and prettier pattern, I have decided to recrochet, rework, and rewrite my patterns. All of them. Plus work on the 50+ patterns I have sitting half ready to publish.

That means:

  • New wording
  • New pattern designs
  • New format
  • New photos
  • New backgrounds
  • Bringing in some testers
Times 80!

.........

When you look at it that way, that is a lot of work!

Wish me luck!

A New Design

As I am working toward a new me and focusing on my new goals - spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially, and in a business sense - I decided to revamp my blog look to something sleek.  I have added links to my Ravelry and Craftsy stores at the top of the blog as well as an About Me section.  Feel free to check it out if you wish!  Over the coming months, I plan on announcing new patterns and creating a new view of my work through this blog.  I hope that you continue to explore, craft, and grow with me.

Recovering from the Holidays

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, crafters like me tend to take a break from last minute gifts quickly crocheted/knitted/crafted to wrap and box.  That is exactly what I did.  I made it about a week before the itch to create came back to me.  As I neared the end of 2013, I glanced at the amount of patterns I started to design and develop and almost cried.  There was around 25-30.  How could that be?  How could I have started that many projects and never finish?

*shifty eyes*

Okay!  Okay!  Like some...if not most...crafters, I have put myself in a position to jump from project to project without committing to finish.  Which is how I now have a huge tub of scrap yarn from unfinished WiPs that I frogged.  For those non-crocheters/knitters, WiPs stands for Work in Progress and frogged is...rip it out or ribbit.  Not only have I know have lots of scraps, but I amassed a large amount of yarn over the last few years without really using it.

This...is how I came to one of my goals for 2014.

1.  Do not buy any new yarn until I use a majority of what I have.  (Yep...crafters...I made the goal.)

2. Finish the patterns I started to develop in 2013 by the end of 2014.  This gives me a lot to do and perhaps some new revenue.

3. Create a list of items I want to develop into patterns and try to finish them as well.  So far...the list hit around 20.

If you have been keeping count...that is around 50 patterns to develop and attempt to sell this year.  And that is how I find myself tonight...alone...in the bed...under the covers attempting to stay warm, crocheting one of my old 2013 patterns.  It is turning out cute if I do say so.  Either way, I wanted to share pictures of my tree this year.  We usually do not go all out and this year is the same.  It's simple and fits the handcrafted, passed down ornaments from our childhoods and some I created myself.

Our 2013 Christmas Tree
Underneath is the small tree skirt I made.

And this...is one of our newest ornaments.  My roommate and one of my very best friends is a HUGE coffee drinker.  So, he received this coffee mug ornament (with the coffee the way he likes it) as a gift from me.  He loved it!

Either way, I hope that you had a wonderful holiday - whatever it might have been.  Have you decided to create goals for 2014?  Or just going with the flow?
